HEALTH AND SAFETY
Our health and safety obligations are core to our business and underpins every decision made, which is paramount to a successful safe business and environment for all. Our culture aims to nurture and develop the capabilities of our workforce, encouraging continuous improvement of their own safety understanding and performance. We take every precaution we can to provide our workforce, and the public, with every safeguard possible and are fully committed to creating an incident and injury free working environment.

All members of the Management Team and foreman are qualified to SMSTS or SSSTS level, with plant operatives being predominantly CPCS qualified (the remaining being NPORS). In addition to formal training derived from our training matrix, we have a schedule of toolbox talks including site specific hazards and topics relative to the works being undertaken. We arrange annual ‘safety days’ where team building activities are organised. The safety days also give an opportunity for the workforce to discuss improvements or better ways of working etc. These meetings have been instrumental in providing valuable ‘real life’ solutions to everyday problems the workforce encounter.

We have recently rolled out a behavioural-based health and safety campaign within the business – Work Safe, Home Safe. The aim of the campaign is to encourage behavioural safety within our workforce and supply chain, to ensure they and anyone impacted by their work goes home safely every day. They are encouraged to speak up if they do not feel safe or if they feel there is a better way.

All staff understand the importance of ensuring the required paperwork (ITPs, WPP, TBS, RAMS, Permits etc.) are in place, briefed, understood and signed off prior to commencing works.

We employ the services of Site Safe (UK) Ltd, who are independent Health and Safety consultants, to inform and update us on all issues involving Health and Safety. Their representatives visit all of our sites and put forward any recommendations, which we then implement.
As accredited members of CHAS, SSIP, Constructionline and FORS, C. Dowdy (Contractor) Ltd is recognised by the industry as a company that has attained the highest safety standards.
All our operatives are holders of CSCS certificates and are NVQ qualified. All hold the relevant plant tickets, Qualified Appointed First Aiders are on site and all our operatives are issued with a comprehensive first aid kit, safety equipment and PPE.
